Flyleaf - memento mori

E-mail Print PDF

flyleafFemale solo artists and female fronted bands are definitely on top lately. With that in mind I thought I would review Flyleaf’s Memento Mori and introduce you to a band hot on the heels of Paramore. Flyleaf formed in 2000 and like Paramore have a strong Christian faith. If this isn’t your bag please don’t let it put you off.

The temper trap - conditions

Now I know this album has been out for a few months but I can’t help plugging a band when they deserve it. I also love promoting Aussie bands and these guys just happen to be from a little place called Melbourne. I stumbled upon them whilst watching Video Hits one Sunday morning. Sweet Disposition, the first single to be released from their album was playing and I immediately liked the sound of it. It seems I’m not the only one who is impressed by them. They recently played at a festival in England and went down a storm, racking up a huge crowd of adoring fans!

La roux - self-titled album

E-mail Print PDF

La Roux are ruling the UK right now and it seems taking everyone I know by storm. I have high expectations, which is never good. The duo are strongly influenced by 1980’s synthpop - it shows! Main woman, Eleanor "Elly" Jackson’s Mother Trudie Goodwin starred in the UK’s Bill for years and is a fresh faced 21 year old. Ben Langmaid a London based producer/composer completes the band and prefers to stay in the background.

Gossip - music for men

Hopefully this band needs no introduction from me. I will, however, indulge for the people who have been living with their heads in the clouds or attached to their partners as we so love to do.

Closure in moscow – first temple

E-mail Print PDF

Let me start here by being honest - I only stumbled upon these guys a few weeks ago! I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of them previously. Best of all these super-talented guys are from Australia. Their first EP was released April 2008 called The Penance and the Patience. While the music is more progressive on the album than on the EP, both are just simply brilliant but do sound different. Their album has been released through Vision Records; this only validates how good this band is. Plenty of big named alternative bands are signed to this record such as Chiodos, Pierce the Veil & Circa Survive.

The audition – self-titled album

E-mail Print PDF

The Audition exploded onto the scene with their first album Controversy Loves Company very early 2007. You can find this album rated on many sites with a well deserved 4.5 stars out of 5.
Their sophomore follow-up album Champion was released late 2007 and hasn’t been accepted with as much affection.

Bat for lashes – two suns

E-mail Print PDF

Bat for Lashes is unbelievably a one woman band - Natasha Khan. The debut, Fur & Gold, made a huge impact on many listeners throughout the UK underground scene. Bat for Lashes has been likened to Bjork because of her undeniable talent. Fur & Gold was a fantastically crafted album - ambient, thoughtful and deep. Just listen to What’s A Girl To Do? and tell me this singer/songwriter hasn’t got ample talent. This song is truly brilliant. It guides us through being in a relationship where love for half of the couple has gone.
